FourSquare TrainingLightning Fast Screen Capture with Windows 10 Screen Snip Feature

Excel Training Reviews

FourSquare Training Article

What's the fastest way to take a screenshot or capture a screen image in Windows 10?

Lightning Fast Screen Capture with Screen SnipBy far the fastest way to take a screenshot of your whole screen or capture a part of your screen in Microsoft Windows 10 is to use the Screen Snip Feature.

The Screen Snip feature is mega fast and it opens up Snip and Sketch in active mode for a Rectangular Snip capture in just two clicks which is a fantastic time saving.

So how do I open Snip and Sketch with the Screen Snip feature in just two steps?

  1. Just click on the Notifications icon at the far bottom right of your screen to open the Notifications menu, select Screen Snip and you are away. In just these two steps you have the crosshair in front of you to choose the rectangular screen area that you want to capture.

  2. Step 2: Select your capture area, release your mouse and you're done. It's like magic.

Navigate to the Screen Snip in the Notifications Centre

Screen Snip saves time, it saves frustration, it does a great job and in short it provides a great user experience. Being able to get this app open and active in just two clicks is a real achievement! We love it.

You can also open up Snip and Sketch in active mode using the shortcut key WIN SHIFT + S which is really fast, but that's three keys that you have to hold down as opposed to just two clicks.

The Screen Snip method only requires to you move your mouse and to click twice. It only requires you to use one hand and doesn't require you to use the keyboard at all. Its a more organic and ergonimic way to reach the screen capture functionality that you need.

With the Screen Snip feature you also don't have to go searching for your saved screen capture. Just go straight back to the Notifications centre and you will see that your captured image has been opened up in Snip and Sketch for you.

From here you can edit your screenshot or you can just save it to where you want to put it.

Snip and Sketch is Microsoft's replacement for the Snipping Tool. I've always been a real fan of the Snipping Tool, but with the Snipping Tool you have to locate the App in the search box, open the app and then select 'New' before you even get started. The same was pretty much true of Snip and Sketch before we got the shortcut.

Microsoft have been trying to persuade users to switch from the Snipping Tool across to Snip and Sketch for some time.

Here are Microsoft's own instructions for opening up the legacy Snipping Tool from which you can clearly see just what a cumbersome process taking a simple screenshot used to be:

To open the Snipping Tool, press the Start key, type snipping tool, and then press Enter. (There's no keyboard shortcut to open Snipping Tool.) To choose the type of snip you want, press Alt + M keys and then use the arrow keys to choose Free-form, Rectangular, Window, or Full-screen Snip, and then press Enter.

See the Microsoft Support Article Open Snipping Tool and take a screenshot.

By comparison this is so longwinded and by my count it takes a minimum of thirteen keystokes to get the Snipping Tool active compared to the two clicks (and no keystrokes) that it takes to get Screen Snip active. What a move forwards!

Where is Screen Snip in Windows 11?

I'm afraid that the answer to this question is that we're is not sure yet. It doesn't look like its in the Notification Centre anymore, as in Windows 11 that has changed to displaying stacked cards with a calendar, notifications and so forth. A lot of the features that used to be in the Notification Centre in Windows 10 are now moved across into the System Tray in Windows 11 which is now called Taskbar Corner. There might be a way to add the Screen Snip back in to the Notification Centre, so watch this space. But it also might be the case that the Screen Snip feature has now been made redundant as it doesn't fit logically into the Notification Centre or the System Tray where a lot of Windows 10 Notification Centre items will move to in Windows 11.

We really ❤ love helping organisations to master Microsoft 365. Our only question is: Will it be yours?
