How to Use Custom Image Bullet Points in Microsoft Word
If you have ever wondered how to create custom bullet point images in Microsoft Word, then here's how you can do it really quickly. The Flexibility and Potential of Customised Bullet Point Images
What's best, once you've added your customised picture bullet points in Word, then they will be available to re-use and re-purpose across other Microsoft applications such as PowerPoint etc. as well. Or, you can even use the same method to add your unique bullets directly in other applications themselves. In fact, we could have just as easily called this article "How to Use Custom Image Bullet Points in Microsoft PowerPoint".
Bullet Points are the cornerstone of getting information across to your audience quickly, memorably and with visual effectiveness, so its well worth spending some time mastering working with them and making them more interesting, whether you are creating a document, a presentation, a Sway, Form or List.
If you decide to make your own custom bullet points the choices are endless as you can imagine. You could just create the shapes in Powerpoint and save them as gifs as one of the simplest options. If you know how, you could use graphic design software, or you could find royalty free images on the Internet. These days though, you could also ask AI software to create bullet point images for you. If you get your images from elsewhere always check out the copyright information and "Terms of Use" before you go further.
For anyone starting out creating their own bullet point images, you are going to need to learn about resizing images and compressing images (and also about image types and file extensions) at the very least, but those are topics for another day.
How to add a custom image bullet point using Microsoft Word?
You can add a cool custom bullet point to Word by following these step-by-step instructions in about thirty seconds once you get the hang of it. There are eight steps in total.
- Step One: Go to the Bullets menu (you'll find this in the top left of the Paragraph section in the Home tab.)
- Step Two: Click on the down arrow on the right of the Bullets menu.
- Step Three: From the Dropdown list select Define Custom Bullet at the bottom of the dropdown.
- Step Four: Select Picture to open the Picture Bullet dialog.
- Step Five: Select the Import button. This opens a navigation pane from which you can navigate to the image that you want to use as a bullet point.
- Step Six: Click on the image and click on the Add button.
- Step Seven: Once we have added our picture bullet point we are taken back to the Picture Bullet dialog and you can see that our custom bullet icon has been added to the list of available bullet points.
Select your bullet and click OK. This opens the Define New Bullet dialog. - Step Eight: In the Define New Bullet dialog click OK. Your new image will now be your default bullet point.
This will work in any desktop version of Microsoft Word from 2010 through to Word 365, but it will not work in Word For the Web.
