1) What is VLOOKUP and what does it do?
Now that you've reached intermediate level, there's a good chance that VLOOKUP is the first named Excel function you've encountered which isn't totally self explanatory.
Perhaps the simplest way of explaining VLOOKUP would be as a means of cross-referencing data in one column with that found in another column and then displaying the result.
So, for instance, if you had a column of unique product IDs you might want to be able to input one of those ID's into a cell and from that retrieve a monthly sales figure for that product from a cell in a different column. That's where VLOOKUP comes in and it is an incredibly handy way of retrieving targetted data whether from within the same worksheet or from a centralised dashboard.
Because VLOOKUP cross-references (or looks up) information in columns we can say that it is a vertical lookup function, hence the name. And, if you happen to be using a newer version of Excel which has XLOOKUP available, then its worth knowing that this function can look up both columns and rows meaning it can search both horizontally and vertically.
